At DrugWaste International, we believe the answer extends far beyond financial performance. It includes our commitment to protecting both human health and our environment.

For many years, environmental responsibility in healthcare has focused on reducing waste, improving recycling and ensuring drugs are disposed of ethically and safely. These remain essential priorities, and they always will be. Every pharmaceutical product that is diverted from landfill or prevented from entering our waterways represents a positive step towards protecting both our environment and our communities.

But today, environmental stewardship demands something more.

Climate change is no longer simply an environmental issue; it is a healthcare issue.

Across Europe this month, record-breaking heatwaves have provided another stark reminder of how rapidly our world is changing. Hundreds of millions of people have experienced temperatures exceeding 30°C, and scientists estimate that thousands of excess deaths will occur as these extreme weather events become more frequent and more intense.

What was once considered exceptional is becoming increasingly common.

Heatwaves are now among the deadliest natural hazards in many parts of the world. They increase hospital admissions, worsen cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness and kidney disease, exacerbate mental health conditions, and place enormous pressure on already stretched healthcare systems. Older adults, young children and those living with chronic illness are particularly vulnerable.

This is no longer a prediction about the future. It is happening now.

Denying this fact is akin to denying all that we have learned as healthcare professionals.

As healthcare professionals, we pride ourselves on practising evidence- based care. We encourage vaccination because the science supports it. We advise patients to stop smoking because decades of research demonstrate the health benefits. We educate communities about the safe use and disposal of medicines because prevention is always better than a cure.

Climate change deserves exactly the same evidence-based response. The overwhelming scientific evidence tells us that climate change is already affecting human health. Rising temperatures, changing weather patterns and increasing environmental degradation are no longer isolated environmental concerns; they are major determinants of health.

Remaining silent while this evidence is dismissed, or accepting policies that weaken meaningful climate action, risks failing one of our most important responsibilities as healthcare professionals: protecting public health.

This is not about politics. It is far more important.

It is not about personal ideologies or belief systems. It is far more important.

It is about the science.

It is about recognising the science and responding with the same professionalism, integrity and commitment that we apply to every other healthcare challenge.

Healthcare has always been about prevention. Climate action is prevention on a global scale.

At DrugWaste International, we believe that leadership begins with our own actions.

For many years, we have worked alongside healthcare providers to ensure the safe disposal of pharmaceutical waste. Every DrugWaste Bin we supply contributes to healthier communities.

But we know we can do more.

That is why we are delighted to announce the next step in our sustainability journey …

The introduction of our new Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic DrugWaste bin range.

Manufactured using high-quality recycled plastics, our PCR bins reduce reliance on virgin plastic while maintaining the same durability, safety and performance standards our customers expect from DrugWaste International.

This is far more than a product upgrade; it represents our commitment to embedding sustainability into every aspect of our business.

Throughout the coming months, we will progressively transition to PCR materials, with our current original ‘first generation’ range expected to be manufactured from Post-Consumer Recycled plastic by January 2027.

For us, sustainability isn’t simply a statement in an annual report or a manipulative marketing message; it is reflected in the decisions we make, the products we develop and the partnerships we build.

We believe our customers should never have to choose between quality and environmental responsibility.

With our new PCR range, they won’t have to.
